What this module covers
Charter of patient rights - information, consent, privacy, grievance redressal and staff obligations in daily care.
This is a self-paced training module that maps to NABH Accreditation Standards - PRC (Patient Rights & Education) chapter. It is delivered inside the MedNext app so clinicians and hospital staff can work through it between shifts, with no live sessions or fixed deadlines.
What it covers in detail
Patient Rights & Responsibilities
- The core patient rights recognised in a hospital charter: information about the illness and care, informed consent, privacy and dignity, and confidentiality.
- The right to a second opinion, to know the cost of care, and to refuse treatment.
- Special protections for vulnerable patients and for the child, and the handling of consent for those who cannot consent for themselves.
- The grievance and redressal mechanism and the patient's right to complain without fear of reprisal.
- The patient's own responsibilities and how staff support rights in everyday interactions.
Who should complete this, and why
Every clinical and front-desk staff member upholds or undermines patient rights in daily interactions, so awareness is universal. NABH's patient-rights standards require that the charter is displayed and honoured, and that staff know their obligations around information, consent, privacy and grievance handling.
What you will be able to do after this module
On completion you should be able to
- State the core rights in the hospital's patient charter.
- Support informed consent, privacy and dignity in routine care.
- Direct a patient to the grievance and redressal mechanism.
- Recognise the extra protections owed to vulnerable patients.
Frequently asked questions
Does a patient have the right to refuse treatment?
A competent adult patient generally has the right to refuse treatment after being informed of the consequences. This is part of respecting autonomy, and the refusal and the counselling given should be documented.
What is the hospital's duty on grievances?
Under NABH patient-rights standards, the hospital must have an accessible grievance-redressal mechanism, inform patients of it, and address complaints without the patient fearing that their care will suffer as a result.
