This is a self-paced training module that maps to Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules, 2004 - AERB Safety Codes. It is delivered inside the MedNext app so clinicians and hospital staff can work through it between shifts, with no live sessions or fixed deadlines.

Radiation Safety
- The ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) and the three practical levers of protection: time, distance and shielding.
- Personal dose monitoring with a TLD or equivalent badge, dose limits, and the role of the Radiological Safety Officer.
- Shielding, controlled areas, warning signage and interlocks around X-ray, CT and interventional suites.
- Protection of the patient, staff and public, and special care in pregnancy and paediatrics.
- Regulatory duties under the AERB framework, including equipment registration and quality assurance.
Who should complete this, and why
Radiographers, radiologists, interventional and cath-lab staff, dental and orthopaedic staff who use fluoroscopy, and anyone working near ionising-radiation sources are covered. The AERB framework under the Atomic Energy Rules assigns duties to the facility and to the Radiological Safety Officer, and expects staff who work with radiation to understand protection and monitoring.

What does ALARA mean in practice?
ALARA means keeping radiation dose As Low As Reasonably Achievable. In practice it comes down to minimising the time near the source, maximising distance from it, and using appropriate shielding such as lead aprons and barriers.
Who is the Radiological Safety Officer?
The Radiological Safety Officer is the designated, AERB-recognised person responsible for radiation protection in the facility, overseeing dose monitoring, safe practice, area surveys and compliance with the Safety Codes.
