Frequently asked questions
Is brain-stem death the same as coma?
No. Brain-stem death is the irreversible loss of all brain-stem function, confirmed by a defined clinical testing process. Unlike coma or a persistent vegetative state, it is legally recognised as death, which is what makes deceased donation possible.
Is buying or selling an organ legal?
No. Commercial dealing in human organs is prohibited under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, and is a criminal offence. Donation must be altruistic and follow the Act's consent and authorisation process.
