What is NEET SS?
NEET SS (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test - Super Specialty) is the gateway to DM (Doctorate of Medicine) and MCh (Magister Chirurgiae) super-specialty programmes at medical colleges across India. Conducted annually by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), it covers specialty-specific papers for disciplines such as Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Vascular Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, and many others.
Unlike NEET-PG, NEET SS candidates are practising specialists (MD/MS/DNB holders) competing for a small number of seats. Questions test mastery of the chosen specialty, including landmark trials, latest guidelines, complex clinical management, and operative techniques. The exam is taken after completing MD/MS, making preparation particularly challenging alongside clinical responsibilities.

Specialty-Specific Knowledge (60%): Advanced content from the chosen DM/MCh discipline. For Cardiology: interventional procedures, cardiac imaging, electrophysiology, heart failure management, and device therapy.
Landmark Trials and Evidence (20%): Trial-name questions are extremely common. For each specialty, candidates must know the major trials, their outcomes, and how they changed clinical practice.
Clinical Scenarios (15%): Complex vignette-based questions testing management decisions, interpretation of investigations, and differential diagnosis in advanced specialty cases.
Recent Guidelines and Advances (5%): Latest updates from major guidelines (ACC/AHA, ESC, ESMO, and others) specific to the chosen specialty. Examiners reward candidates who are current with the literature.

Who is eligible to appear for NEET SS?
Candidates who have completed MD, MS, or DNB in a relevant subject are eligible. The specific eligibility depends on the DM/MCh specialty, for example, Cardiology DM requires MD in General Medicine or Paediatrics; Neurosurgery MCh requires MS in General Surgery.
How many seats are available in NEET SS?
There are approximately 1,200 to 1,500 DM/MCh seats across India in total, with roughly 400 to 500 at government medical colleges. Competition is very high, for Cardiology DM at AIIMS Delhi, for instance, only a handful of seats are available.
What type of questions are asked in NEET SS?
Questions are specialty-specific and advanced. Expect landmark trial questions (CURE, PLATO, ATLAS-ACS for Cardiology), complex clinical scenarios, imaging interpretation, and recent guideline-based management questions. Simple factual recall is rarely tested.
Is NEET SS harder than NEET-PG?
In terms of knowledge depth, yes. NEET SS tests a narrower but far deeper domain. Candidates must be expert-level in their specialty, familiar with landmark trials, and current with guidelines published within the last 2 years.
