Indications and dose
**Postpartum haemorrhage caused by uterine atony**
- **Adult** (By Intramuscular Injection): 200-500 micrograms for 1 dose, intramuscular injection is the preferred route of administration, dose may be repeated if other causes of haemorrhage are ruled out and other uterotonics are not available (e.g. in a home birth setting).
- **Adult** (By Slow Intravenous Injection): 250-500 micrograms for 1 dose.
Cautions
Acute porphyrias ; cardiac disease; hypertension; multiple pregnancy
Contraindications
Eclampsia; first stage of labour; induction of labour; second stage of labour; sepsis; severe cardiac disease; severe hypertension; vascular disease
Side effects
Frequency not known Abdominal pain; arrhythmias; chest pain; coronary vasospasm; dizziness; dyspnoea; headache; hypertension; myocardial infarction; nausea; palpitations; pulmonary oedema; rash; tinnitus; vasoconstriction; vomiting
