Indications and dose
**Prevention of scurvy**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 25-75 mg daily.
**Treatment of scurvy**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): Not less than 250 mg daily in divided doses.
**Treatment of scurvy for ascorbic acid**
- **Child 1 month-3 years** (By mouth): 125-250 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses.
- **Child 4-11 years** (By mouth): 250-500 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses.
- **Child 12-17 years** (By mouth): 0.5-1 g daily in 1-2 divided doses.
**Adjunct to desferrioxamine (to enhance the excretion of iron 1 month after treatment) for ascorbic acid**
- **Child** (By mouth): 100-200 mg daily, to be taken 1 hour before food.
**Metabolic disorders, Tyrosinaemia type III, Transient tyrosinaemia of the newborn, Glutathione synthase deficiency, Hawkinsinuria for ascorbic acid**
- **Neonate** (By mouth): 50-200 mg daily, dose to be adjusted as necessary.
- **Child** (By mouth): 200-400 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses, dose to be adjusted as necessary, increased if necessary up to 1 g daily.
Contraindications
Hyperoxaluria
Side effects
Frequency not known Diarrhoea; gastrointestinal disorder; hyperoxaluria; oxalate nephrolithiasis; polyuria
Interactions
**Other interactions (3):**
- Concomitant administration of aspirin and ascorbic acid may interfere with absorption of ascorbic acid.
- Renal excretion of salicylate is not affected and does not lead to reduced anti-inflammatory effects of aspirin.
- Ascorbic acid may interfere with biochemical determinations of creatinine, uric acid and glucose in samples of blood and urine.
