ABG (Respiratory): Arterial Blood Gas. Measurement of oxygen, CO2, pH, and bicarbonate from an arterial blood sample.
ACS (Cardiology): Acute Coronary Syndrome. Umbrella term for STEMI, NSTEMI, and unstable angina.
GCS (Neurology): Glasgow Coma Scale. Neurological scale used to objectively describe consciousness level (E plus V plus M, max 15).
ECG (Cardiology): Electrocardiogram. Recording of the electrical activity of the heart.
NEWS (Clinical): National Early Warning Score. A standardised early warning score based on 6 physiological parameters.
SOFA (Critical Care): Sequential Organ Failure Assessment. ICU scoring system assessing the severity of organ failure.
PE (Respiratory): Pulmonary Embolism. Blockage of the pulmonary artery or its branches, usually from a DVT.
BNP (Cardiology): B-type Natriuretic Peptide. Biomarker released by ventricular myocytes under stretch; elevated in heart failure.
SBAR (Clinical Skills): Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation. A structured communication framework for handover.
GTN (Pharmacology): Glyceryl Trinitrate. Nitrate vasodilator used in angina and acute LVF.
