The second is treatment protocols -- knowing the first-line treatment for each condition. The third is the pharmacology of dermatological drugs, particularly immunosuppressants and biologics used in psoriasis and dermatological autoimmune conditions.
The overlap with medicine is significant. - **Leprosy:** 1-2 questions per paper. Ridley-Jopling classification (TT, BT, BB, BL, LL), nerve involvement patterns (ulnar, lateral popliteal, greater auricular), type 1 reaction (reversal, T-cell mediated, treat with steroids) vs type 2 reaction (ENL, immune complex, treat with thalidomide or steroids), and WHO MDT (PB: rifampicin + dapsone 6 months, MB: rifampicin + dapsone + clofazimine 12 months).
Recommended study approach
IADVL Textbook of Dermatology or Neena Khanna's Illustrated Synopsis of Dermatology are the standard references. For a more concise exam-oriented approach, review books focusing on clinical descriptions and treatment protocols are effective. Fitzpatrick's Dermatology in General Medicine is the international gold standard but is too detailed for NEET PG.
Study dermatology by morphological category: papulosquamous (1 week), vesiculobullous (1 week), infections (1 week), and miscellaneous (drug reactions, pigmentary, connective tissue -- 1 week). This 4-week block is sufficient for comprehensive coverage.
For each condition, learn the diagnostic triad: clinical description (what does it look like) + specific sign or test (Nikolsky, Auspitz, KOH) + first-line treatment. This three-part framework mirrors the exam format and keeps your preparation efficient. Clinical photographs are essential -- spend at least 25% of your dermatology time on image-based learning.
Time allocation
Dermatology deserves 3-4 hours per week, totalling roughly 50-70 hours. Split 35-65 between reading and image/MCQ practice. The image component is critical -- dermatology is a visual specialty and the exam is increasingly image-based.
If short on time, focus on vesiculobullous diseases (covers 2-3 questions), psoriasis and lichen planus (covers 2-3 questions), and drug reactions (covers 1-2 questions). These areas account for 60-70% of dermatology questions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Studying dermatology from text descriptions without looking at clinical images -- the exam uses photographs, and textbook descriptions alone are insufficient for visual recognition
- Confusing pemphigus and pemphigoid -- the split level (intraepidermal vs subepidermal), antibody target, blister type (flaccid vs tense), and IF pattern are all different and all tested
- Not knowing dermatological drug side effects -- methotrexate hepatotoxicity, cyclosporine nephrotoxicity, and biologic risks are tested in both dermatology and pharmacology
- Ignoring leprosy -- it carries 1-2 questions per paper and the WHO MDT regimens, reaction types, and nerve involvement patterns are directly tested

Last-month revision strategy
In the final month, dermatology should receive 1 hour every third day. Focus on: (1) vesiculobullous disease differentiation table (split level, antibody, IF pattern, clinical features); (2) drug reaction differentiation (SJS vs TEN vs DRESS vs FDE); (3) review 30-40 clinical images covering the most tested conditions.
Solve 1-2 PYQ sets. Dermatology questions are pattern-based -- the same conditions, the same clinical signs, the same treatment choices. If your pattern recognition is intact, the questions are straightforward.
