Mnemonics and expansions

**PVT TIM HLL:** Phenylalanine, Valine, Threonine, Tryptophan, Isoleucine, Methionine, Histidine, Leucine, Lysine. Lists the essential amino acids that the body cannot synthesise.
**Oh Tiny Hydras Live In Lakes:** Oxidoreductases, Transferases, Hydrolases, Lyases, Isomerases, Ligases. Gives the six IUBMB enzyme classes in order.
**Can Fats Provide All? (4-9-4-7):** Carbohydrate 4, Fat 9, Protein 4, Alcohol 7 (Cal per gram). Recalls the calorific value of each principal foodstuff.
**High Class Horses Drive Karts:** Hyaluronic acid, Chondroitin sulphate, Heparin, Dermatan sulphate, Keratan sulphate. Names the major glycosaminoglycans.
**Good Students Always Pass Unto Complete Production of Heme:** Glycine, Succinyl CoA, Aminolevulinate, Porphobilinogen, Uroporphyrinogen, Coproporphyrinogen, Protoporphyrin, Heme. Orders the intermediates of the heme biosynthesis pathway.
**SIX Glu-Val:** Position 6, Glutamate replaced by Valine. Captures the single point mutation underlying sickle cell disease.
**Little Lions Always Eat:** Linoleic acid, Linolenic acid, Arachidonic acid (Essential). Lists the essential fatty acids.
**Lysine, Arginine, Histidine Are Basic:** Lysine, Arginine, Histidine. Names the three basic amino acids.
**Cute Mice Smell Sulfur:** Cysteine, Methionine, Cystine. Identifies the sulphur-containing amino acids.
**Some Cats Don't Meow:** Simple lipids, Complex lipids, Derived lipids, Miscellaneous lipids. Gives the broad classification of lipids.
**CHON S:** Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sulphur. Lists the major elements that make up proteins.
**K-MEADS:** Kwashiorkor: Moon face, Edema, Anaemia, Discolouration of hair and skin, Stunted growth. Summarises the clinical features of kwashiorkor.
