What's inside the CT Head library
The CT head library covers the acute findings that decide management — blood, midline shift, hydrocephalus and early ischaemia — each with the distinguishing features spelt out.
Extradural haematoma
A biconvex (lens-shaped) hyperdense collection that does not cross suture lines, classically from a middle meningeal artery tear after temporal trauma. The lucid interval then deterioration is the exam story; look for an associated skull fracture.
Subdural haematoma
A crescent-shaped collection that follows the brain surface and crosses suture lines. Acute bleeds are hyperdense, chronic ones hypodense. It is common in the elderly and anticoagulated after low-impact trauma.
Ischaemic stroke
Early signs are subtle: loss of grey-white differentiation, sulcal effacement and a hyperdense vessel. An established infarct becomes a wedge-shaped hypodensity in a vascular territory. Excluding haemorrhage first is what makes the scan thrombolysis-defining.
