Thiamine clinical drug profile including indications, dosing, side effects, cautions and interactions.
Indications and dose
**Mild deficiency**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 25-100 mg daily.
**Severe deficiency**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 200-300 mg daily in divided doses.
**Maple syrup urine disease for thiamine**
- **Neonate** (By mouth): 5 mg/kg daily, dose to be adjusted as necessary.
- **Child** (By mouth): 5 mg/kg daily, dose to be adjusted as necessary.
**Metabolic disorders, Congenital lactic acidosis for thiamine**
- **Neonate** (Initially by mouth, or by intravenous infusion): 50-200 mg once daily, dose to be adjusted as necessary, the total dose may alternatively be given in 2-3 divided doses, administer intravenous infusion over 30 minutes.
- **Child** (Initially by mouth, or by intravenous infusion): 100-300 mg once daily, dose to be adjusted as necessary, the total dose may alternatively be given in 2-3 divided doses, administer intravenous infusion over 30 minutes, (by mouth) increased if necessary up to 2 g daily.
Cautions
Anaphylaxis may occasionally follow injection, see Important safety information
Interactions
**Other interactions (1):**
- Folic acid can reduce the plasma concentration of phenytoin.
Breast feeding
Severely thiamine-deficient mothers should avoid breast-feeding as toxic methyl-glyoxal present in milk.
