Drug action
Strontium ranelate stimulates bone formation and reduces bone resorption.
Indications and dose
**Severe osteoporosis in men and postmenopausal women at increased risk of fractures [when other treatments are contra-indicated or not tolerated] (initiated by a specialist)**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 2 g once daily, dose to be taken in water and at bedtime.
Cautions
Risk factors for cardiovascular disease-assess before and every 6-12 months during treatment; Risk factors for venous thromboembolism (discontinue in patients who become immobile) Cautions, further information Risk of cardiovascular events Manufacturer advises treatment should be stopped if ischaemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, or cerebrovascular disease develops, or if hypertension is uncontrolled.
Contraindications
Cerebrovascular disease; current or previous venous thromboembolic event; ischaemic heart disease; peripheral arterial disease; temporary or permanent immobilisation; uncontrolled hypertension
Side effects
Common or very common Angioedema; arthralgia; bronchial hyperreactivity; consciousness impaired; constipation; diarrhoea; dizziness; embolism and thrombosis; gastrointestinal discomfort; gastrointestinal disorders; headache; hepatitis; hypercholesterolaemia; insomnia; memory loss; muscle complaints; myocardial infarction; nausea; pain; paraesthesia; peripheral oedema; skin reactions; vertigo; vomiting Uncommon Alopecia; confusion; dry mouth; fever; lymphadenopathy; malaise; oral disorders; seizure Rare or very rare Bone marrow failure; eosinophilia; severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs)
Pregnancy
Manufacturer advises avoid-toxicity in animal studies.
Breast feeding
Manufacturer advises avoid-data suggest present in human milk.
Renal impairment
Manufacturer advises avoid if creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/minute. See Prescribing in renal impairment .
