Sodium polystyrene sulfonate clinical drug profile including indications, dosing, side effects, cautions and interactions.
Indications and dose
**Hyperkalaemia associated with anuria or severe oliguria, and in dialysis patients**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 15 g 3-4 times a day.
- **Adult** (By Rectum): 30 g, retain for 9 hours followed by irrigation to remove resin from colon.
**Hyperkalaemia associated with anuria or severe oliguria, and in dialysis patients for sodium polystyrene sulfonate**
- **Child** (By mouth): 0.5-1 g/kg daily in divided doses; maximum 60 g per day.
- **Neonate** (By rectum): 0.5-1 g/kg daily, irrigate colon to remove resin after 8-12 hours.
- **Child** (By rectum): 0.5-1 g/kg daily, irrigate colon to remove resin after 8-12 hours; maximum 30 g per day.
Cautions
For sodium polystyrene sulfonate Congestive heart failure; hypertension; oedema
Contraindications
For sodium polystyrene sulfonate Obstructive bowel disease
Side effects
For sodium polystyrene sulfonate Frequency not known Appetite decreased; bezoar; constipation (discontinue-avoid magnesium-containing laxatives); diarrhoea; electrolyte imbalance; epigastric discomfort; gastrointestinal disorders; increased risk of infection; nausea; necrosis (in combination with sorbitol); vomiting
Interactions
**Severe interactions:**
- Concomitant use not recommended Sorbitol (oral or rectal): Concomitant use of Sorbitol with sodium polystyrene sulfonate is not recommended due to cases of intestinal necrosis and other serious...
**Other interactions (1):**
- To be used with caution Cation-donating agents: may reduce the potassium binding effectiveness of Resonium A.
Pregnancy
