Indications and dose
**Skin disinfection**
- **Adult** (To The Skin): Apply undiluted in pre-operative skin disinfection.
**Cutaneous peri-ocular and conjunctival antisepsis before ocular surgery**
- **Adult** (To The Eye): Apply, leave for 2 minutes, then irrigate thoroughly with sodium chloride 0.9%.
**Skin disinfection for povidone-iodine**
- **Child** (To the skin): (consult product literature).
**Cutaneous peri-ocular and conjunctival antisepsis before ocular surgery for povidone-iodine**
- **Neonate** (To the eye): Apply, leave for 2 minutes, then irrigate thoroughly with sodium chloride 0.9%.
- **Child** (To the eye): Apply, leave for 2 minutes, then irrigate thoroughly with sodium chloride 0.9%.
**Skin disinfection for Videne solution**
- **Child** (To the skin): Apply undiluted in pre-operative skin disinfection and general antisepsis.
**Skin disinfection for Videne surgical scrub**
- **Child** (To the skin): Use as a pre-operative scrub for hand and skin disinfection.
**Skin disinfection for Videne tincture**
- **Child** (To the skin): Apply undiluted in pre-operative skin disinfection.
Cautions
For povidone-iodine With topical use Broken skin; large open wounds Cautions, further information Large open wounds With topical use: The application of povidone-iodine to large wounds or severe burns may produce systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia and impairment of renal function. Cautions For Videne tincture With topical use Procedures involving hot wire cautery and diathermy
Contraindications
For povidone-iodine When used by eye Concomitant use of ocular antimicrobial drugs; concomitant use of ocular formulations containing mercury-based preservatives; preterm neonates With topical use Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders (in adults); concomitant use of lithium; corrected gestational age under 32 weeks (in children); infants body-weight under 1.5 kg (in children); regular use in neonates (in children)
Side effects
For povidone-iodine Rare or very rare When used by eye (topical) Eye erythema; punctate keratitis Frequency not known When used by eye (topical) Cytotoxicity; eye discolouration With topical use Acute kidney injury; goitre; hyperthyroidism; hypothyroidism; metabolic acidosis; skin burning sensation
Pregnancy
For povidone-iodine With topical use: Sufficient iodine may be absorbed to affect the fetal thyroid in the second and third trimester.
Breast feeding
For povidone-iodine Avoid regular or excessive use.
Renal impairment
For povidone-iodine With topical use: Caution when applied to large wounds or severe burns (increased risk of systemic exposure). M
