Oritavancin is a glycopeptide antibacterial; it has bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria including various staphylococci.
Drug action
Oritavancin is a glycopeptide antibacterial; it has bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria including various staphylococci. However, there are reports of Staphylococcus aureus with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides and increasing reports of glycopeptide-resistant enterococci.
Indications and dose
**Acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections**
- **Adult** (By Intravenous Infusion): 1.2 g for 1 dose.
Contraindications
Concomitant use with heparin Contra-indications, further information Concomitant use with heparin Use of intravenous heparin is contra-indicated for 120 hours after oritavancin administration-activated partial thromboplastin time test results may remain falsely elevated for up to 120 hours after oritavancin administration. Side effects
Common or very common Abscess; anaemia; constipation; diarrhoea; dizziness; headache; increased risk of infection; limb abscess; myalgia; nausea; peripheral oedema; skin reactions; tachycardia; vomiting Uncommon Abdominal pain; angioedema; chest discomfort; dyspnoea; eosinophilia; fever; flushing; hypersensitivity; hypersensitivity vasculitis; hyperuricaemia; hypoglycaemia; respiratory disorders; tenosynovitis; thrombocytopenia Rare or very rare Chills; hypoxia; pain; tremor; vancomycin-like infusion reaction Frequency not known Antibiotic associated colitis; infusion related reaction; pseudomembranous enterocolitis
Pregnancy
Avoid unless potential benefit outweighs risk-no information available. M
Breast feeding
Avoid-present in milk in animal studies. M
