Olsalazine sodium clinical drug profile including indications, dosing, side effects, cautions and interactions.
Indications and dose
**Treatment of acute attack of mild ulcerative colitis**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 1 g daily in divided doses, doses to be taken after meals, then increased if necessary up to 3 g daily in divided doses (max. per dose 1 g), dose to be increased over 1 week.
**Maintenance of remission of mild ulcerative colitis**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): Maintenance 500 mg twice daily, dose to be taken after food.
**Treatment of acute attack of mild ulcerative colitis for olsalazine sodium**
- **Child 2-17 years** (By mouth): 500 mg twice daily, dose to be taken after food, then increased if necessary up to 1 g 3 times a day, dose to be increased over 1 week.
**Maintenance of remission of mild ulcerative colitis for olsalazine sodium**
- **Child 2-17 years** (By mouth): Maintenance 250-500 mg twice daily, dose to be taken after food.
Side effects
Common or very common Arthralgia; cough; diarrhoea; dizziness; fever; gastrointestinal discomfort; headache; leucopenia; myalgia; nausea; proteinuria; skin reactions; vomiting Uncommon Alopecia; depression; dyspnoea; face oedema; pancreatitis; paraesthesia; photosensitivity reaction; tachycardia; thrombocytopenia; vertigo Rare or very rare Agranulocytosis; angioedema; blood disorder; bone marrow disorders; cardiac inflammation; hepatic disorders; interstitial lung disease; lupus-like syndrome; nephritis tubulointerstitial; nephrotic syndrome; neutropenia; peripheral neuropathy; renal impairment; respiratory disorders Frequency not known Cholelithiasis; eosinophilia; haematuria; haemolytic anaemia; oligozoospermia (reversible); severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs); ulcerative colitis aggravated Side-effects, further information A blood count should be performed and the drug stopped immediately if there is suspicion of a blood dyscrasia. Interactions
**Other interactions (2):**
- Salicylates should be discontinued prior to the initiation of a low molecular weight heparin or heparinoid.
- Increased prothrombin time in patients taking concomitant warfarin has been reported.
Pregnancy
Manufacturer advises avoid unless potential benefit outweighs risk.
Breast feeding
Monitoring in breast feeding Monitor breast-fed infants for diarrhoea.
Renal impairment
Use with caution in mild to moderate impairment; avoid in significant impairment. M
