Indications and dose
**Treatment of acute migraine**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 2.5 mg, followed by 2.5 mg after at least 4 hours if required, to be taken only if migraine recurs (patient not responding to initial dose should not take second dose for same attack); maximum 5 mg per day.
**Menstrual migraine prophylaxis**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 2.5 mg twice daily, to be taken from 2 days before until 3 days after bleeding starts.
Cautions
Conditions which predispose to coronary artery disease; elderly
Contraindications
Coronary vasospasm; ischaemic heart disease; moderate or severe hypertension; peripheral vascular disease; previous cerebrovascular accident; previous myocardial infarction; previous transient ischaemic attack; Prinzmetal's angina; uncontrolled hypertension
Side effects
Common or very common Dizziness; drowsiness; fatigue; feeling hot; malaise; nausea; paraesthesia; vomiting Uncommon Arrhythmias; feeling abnormal; pain; palpitations; visual impairment Rare or very rare Angina pectoris; colitis ischaemic; coronary vasospasm; face oedema; myocardial infarction; peripheral vascular disease; skin reactions Side-effects, further information Discontinue if symptoms of heat, heaviness, pressure or tightness (including throat and chest) occur.
Pregnancy
There is limited experience of using 5HT 1 -receptor agonists during pregnancy; manufacturers advise that they should be avoided unless the potential benefit outweighs the risk.
Breast feeding
Withhold breast-feeding for 24 hours.
Hepatic impairment
Manufacturer advises caution in mild to moderate impairment (risk of decreased clearance); avoid in severe impairment. Dose adjustments Manufacturer advises maximum 2.5 mg in 24 hours in mild to moderate impairment.
Renal impairment
