Side effects
Frequency not known Diarrhoea; hypermagnesaemia Overdose Symptoms of hypermagnesaemia may include nausea, vomiting, flushing, thirst, hypotension, drowsiness, confusion, reflexes absent (due to neuromuscular blockade), respiratory depression, speech slurred, diplopia, muscle weakness, arrhythmias, coma, and cardiac arrest.
Interactions
**Other interactions (4):**
- Cardiovascular drugs: Digoxin and loop diuretics are magnesiuretic drugs and may affect magnesium balance.
- Magnesium deficiency may enhance digoxin toxicity.
- This specifically applies to: Cellulose sodium phosphate; edetate disodium : concurrent use with magnesium supplements may result in binding of magnesium; patients should be advised not to take...
- Because of increased magnesium losses, a dose adjustment of magnesium may be necessary when taking the following substances: Aminoglycoside antibiotics, cisplatinum and ciclosporin A Diuretics...
Renal impairment
Caution (risk of hypermagnesaemia); avoid if creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/minute. M See Prescribing in renal impairment .
