Indications and dose
**Hypertension**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): Initially 25 mg twice daily, increased in steps of 25-50 mg every 2 weeks, maximum daily dose should be given in divided doses; maximum 200 mg per day.
**Benign prostatic hyperplasia**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 20 mg twice daily, increased in steps of 20 mg every 2 weeks if required, increased if necessary up to 100 mg daily in divided doses.
- **Elderly** (By Mouth): 20 mg daily may be adequate, dose to be taken at night.
Cautions
Cataract surgery (risk of intra-operative floppy iris syndrome); control incipient heart failure before initiating indoramin; elderly; epilepsy (convulsions in animal studies); history of depression; Parkinson's disease (extrapyramidal disorders reported) Cautions, further information Elderly For alpha 1 -selective adrenoceptor blockers, Screening Tool of Older Persons' potentially inappropriate Prescriptions (STOPP) criteria to aid medication reviews (see Prescribing in the elderly for information). Potentially inappropriate: in those with symptomatic postural hypotension or micturition syncope (risk of precipitating recurrent syncope) in those with persistent postural hypotension i.e. recurrent drop in systolic blood pressure 20 mmHg (risk of syncope and falls).
Contraindications
Established heart failure; history micturition syncope (when used for benign prostatic hyperplasia); history of postural hypotension (when used for benign prostatic hyperplasia)
Side effects
Rare or very rare Parkinson's disease exacerbated Frequency not known Depression; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; ejaculation failure; fatigue; headache; nasal congestion; weight increased
Interactions
**Other interactions (2):**
- Concomitant use of indoramin with antihypertensive drugs or drugs with hypotensive properties e.g.
- Alcohol can increase both the rate and extent of absorption of indoramin, but no untoward effects have been reported at recommended doses.
Pregnancy
No evidence of teratogenicity; manufacturers advise use only when potential benefit outweighs risk.
Breast feeding
