Drug action
Cephalosporins are antibacterials that attach to penicillin binding proteins to interrupt cell wall biosynthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Indications and dose
**Aerobic Gram-negative infections [in patients with limited treatment options] (administered on expert advice)**
- **Adult** (By Intravenous Infusion): 2 g every 8 hours, duration should be tailored to site of infection-consult product literature.
Cautions
Seizure disorders; supra-normal creatinine clearance Cautions, further information Supra-normal creatinine clearance Manufacturer advises to increase frequency of infusion to 2 g every 6 hours in patients with creatinine clearance of 120 mL/minute or more.
Side effects
Common or very common Abdominal pain; diarrhoea; dizziness; eosinophilia; headache; leucopenia; nausea; neutropenia; pseudomembranous enterocolitis; skin reactions; thrombocytopenia; vomiting Uncommon Anaphylactic reaction; angioedema Rare or very rare Agranulocytosis; haemolytic anaemia; nephritis tubulointerstitial (reversible); severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) Side-effects For cefiderocol Common or very common Clostridioides difficile colitis; cough; hepatic function abnormal; increased risk of infection
Pregnancy
Manufacturer advises avoid-limited data available but not known to be harmful in animal studies.
Breast feeding
Manufacturer advises avoid-not known if present in human milk. A specialist source confirms lack of information in human lactation, but states acceptable to use (cephalosporins generally not expected to cause adverse effects in breastfed infants).
Renal impairment
