Indications and dose
**Vitamin E deficiency**
- **Child** (By Mouth): 2-10 mg/kg daily, increased if necessary up to 20 mg/kg daily.
**Malabsorption in cystic fibrosis**
- **Child** (By Mouth): 12-17 years 100-200 mg once daily, dose to be adjusted as necessary, to be taken with food and pancreatic enzymes.
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 100-200 mg once daily, dose to be adjusted as necessary, to be taken with food and pancreatic enzymes.
**Vitamin E deficiency in cholestasis and severe liver disease**
- **Child** (By Mouth): 12-17 years Initially 200 mg daily, adjusted according to response, increased if necessary up to 200 mg/kg daily.
**Malabsorption in abetalipoproteinaemia**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 50-100 mg/kg once daily.
**Vitamin E deficiency for alpha tocopheryl acetate**
- **Neonate** (By mouth): 10 mg/kg once daily.
- **Child** (By mouth): 2-10 mg/kg daily, increased if necessary up to 20 mg/kg daily.

- **Child 1 month-11 years** (By mouth): Initially 100 mg daily, adjusted according to response, increased if necessary up to 200 mg/kg daily.
- **Child 12-17 years** (By mouth): Initially 200 mg daily, adjusted according to response, increased if necessary up to 200 mg/kg daily.
- **Neonate** (By intramuscular injection): 10 mg/kg once a month.
- **Child** (By intramuscular injection): 10 mg/kg once a month (max. per dose 100 mg).
**Malabsorption in abetalipoproteinaemia for alpha tocopheryl acetate**
- **Neonate** (By mouth): 100 mg/kg once daily.
- **Child** (By mouth): 50-100 mg/kg once daily.
Cautions
For alpha tocopheryl acetate Predisposition to thrombosis
Side effects
For alpha tocopheryl acetate Frequency not known Abdominal pain (more common at high doses); bleeding tendency; diarrhoea (more common at high doses); increased risk of thrombosis
Pregnancy
For alpha tocopheryl acetate No evidence of safety of high doses.
Breast feeding
For alpha tocopheryl acetate Excreted in milk; minimal risk, although caution with large doses.
