Indications and dose
**Maintenance of abstinence in alcohol-dependent patients**
- **Adult** (By Mouth): 18-65 years (body-weight 60 kg and above) 666 mg 3 times a day.
Cautions
Continued alcohol abuse (risk of treatment failure)
Side effects
Common or very common Abdominal pain; diarrhoea; flatulence; nausea; sexual dysfunction; skin reactions; vomiting
Interactions
**Other interactions (5):**
- The concomitant intake of alcohol and acamprosate does not affect the pharmacokinetics of either alcohol or acamprosate.
- In clinical trials, acamprosate has been safely administered in combination with antidepressants, anxiolytics, hypnotics and sedatives, and non-opioid analgesics.
- No change in the frequency of clinical and/or biological adverse reactions has been shown when acamprosate is used concomitantly with disulfiram, oxazepam, tetrabamate or meprobamate.
- Pharmacokinetic studies have been completed and show no interaction between acamprosate and diazepam, imipramine.
- There is no information available on the concomitant administration of acamprosate with diuretics.
Pregnancy
Manufacturer advises avoid unless potential benefit outweighs risk.
Breast feeding
Avoid.
Hepatic impairment
Manufacturer advises caution in severe hepatic failure-no information available.
Renal impairment
Avoid in renal impairment if serum-creatinine greater than 120 micromol/litre. M
