NEET-UG is the single national entrance examination for admission to MBBS, BDS and allied undergraduate medical courses across India. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), it draws its syllabus from Class 11 and Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology. For aspirants planning 2026, understanding the syllabus structure and building a disciplined preparation strategy early is the most reliable path to a competitive score.
What is NEET-UG and who conducts it?
NEET-UG stands for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate). It is the mandatory qualifying examination for admission to all undergraduate medical programmes in India, including government and private medical colleges, AIIMS institutions and JIPMER. The examination is administered by the National Testing Agency, which releases the official notification, exam schedule, application portal and detailed information bulletin each year.
Because the NTA has authority to revise the exam pattern, number of questions, marking scheme and mode of examination, aspirants should treat the official NTA notification for the relevant year as the definitive source of that information. Preparation, however, can begin in earnest from the syllabus framework, which has remained anchored to Class 11 and Class 12 higher secondary curricula.
The NEET-UG syllabus by subject
The syllabus is divided across three broad subjects, each covering two years of higher secondary study. The NMC and NTA jointly notify the syllabus; aspirants should download the current-year syllabus document directly from the NTA website to verify any recent updates.
Biology (Botany and Zoology)

Class 12 topics extend to solutions, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, surface chemistry, p-block and d/f-block elements, coordination compounds, haloalkanes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, amines and biomolecules.
Physics
Physics demands conceptual clarity and numerical practice. Class 11 covers motion, laws of motion, work and energy, rotational motion, gravitation, properties of bulk matter, thermodynamics, kinetic theory, oscillations and waves. Class 12 extends to electrostatics, current electricity, magnetic effects, electromagnetic induction, electromagnetic waves, optics, dual nature of radiation, atoms, nuclei and semiconductor electronics.
Exam pattern overview
Historically NEET-UG has been a pen-and-paper (OMR-based) examination with multiple-choice questions drawn from Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with negative marking applied for incorrect answers. However, the NTA has revised the pattern in recent years and retains the authority to do so again. The exact number of questions per section, total marks, duration, marking scheme and any section-wise internal choice must be confirmed from the official NTA information bulletin for 2026. Do not rely on figures from previous years without cross-checking, as these have changed between cycles.
Preparation strategy for NEET-UG
Build on NCERT first
NCERT textbooks for Classes 11 and 12 are the primary source for Biology and provide the conceptual backbone for Chemistry and Physics. Read them thoroughly before moving to reference books. In Biology especially, NCERT lines are often quoted directly in questions; knowing the text precisely matters.
Practise previous-year questions consistently
Previous-year NEET-UG papers reveal the frequency and framing of topics. Working through them systematically highlights which chapters are tested most heavily and in what style. Aim to complete at least five to seven years of papers before the exam, under timed conditions.
Take timed full-length mock tests
Mock tests serve two purposes: building stamina for a lengthy examination sitting and identifying weak areas before they cost marks on the actual day. Analyse each mock test critically. Errors due to conceptual gaps need revision; errors due to misreading or time pressure need test-taking discipline.
Build a fixed weekly study schedule
A structured timetable prevents the common pattern of over-studying favoured subjects and neglecting others. Allocate dedicated slots to Physics, Chemistry and Biology each week, with revision sessions built in. Biology revision can be done through active recall rather than re-reading, which is faster and more durable.
Strengthen weak chapters before the final stretch
Most aspirants identify their weak chapters late and run out of time. Use mock-test analysis from early in preparation to spot these chapters and address them while there is still revision time available.
Common preparation mistakes - Skipping or skimming NCERT in favour of thick reference books too early in the cycle. - Attempting mock tests without analysing them; the analysis session is as valuable as the test itself. - Neglecting Biology because it seems qualitative; it carries the largest share of questions and benefits from regular short-burst revision. - Leaving Physics numerical practice until the final weeks; consistent daily practice across the year is far more effective. - Treating the syllabus from a previous year as definitive for 2026 without checking the NTA notification.
