How Marks Are Distributed in NEET-PG
NEET-PG is a single-paper, 200-question examination covering the entire MBBS curriculum. Each correct answer carries four marks; each incorrect answer deducts one mark. The paper is not divided into named sections by subject, so questions from any discipline appear throughout.

- Hernias and abdominal wall: anatomical landmarks, complications, mesh principles.

- Surgical anatomy of key structures: often tested via applied anatomy scenarios.
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
OBG is historically high-yield and benefits from consistent question patterns. Repeatedly tested areas include:
- Normal and high-risk obstetrics: antepartum haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes management.
- Labour and delivery: Bishop score, partograph interpretation, operative obstetrics.
- Gynaecological oncology: cervical cancer staging, ovarian tumour markers, endometrial cancer risk factors.
- Contraception and family planning: failure rates, mechanisms, contraindications.
- Infertility and reproductive endocrinology: PCOS diagnostic criteria, ovulation induction protocols.
Paediatrics
Paediatrics contributes a consistent and broadly predictable slice of questions. High-yield clusters include:
- Growth and development milestones: both motor and language, at key ages.
- Neonatology: birth asphyxia management, neonatal jaundice, respiratory distress syndrome.
- Nutrition: PEM classification, micronutrient deficiency presentations, infant feeding guidelines.
- Vaccine-preventable diseases and the national immunisation schedule.

Pharmacology
Pharmacology is one of the most question-dense subjects relative to its content volume and is therefore exceptionally high-yield per hour of study. The examination consistently tests mechanisms of action, dose-response relationships, adverse effect profiles and drug interactions. Priority areas include:
- Autonomic pharmacology: cholinergic and adrenergic agonists and antagonists, clinical uses and toxicities.
- Cardiovascular drugs: antihypertensives, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants and fibrinolytics.
- Antimicrobials: mechanisms, spectrum, resistance patterns and specific clinical indications.
- CNS pharmacology: antiepileptics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, mechanisms and adverse effects.

- General pathology: cell injury, inflammation and repair, neoplasia (invasion, metastasis, tumour markers).
- Haematopathology: anaemia classification, haematological malignancies, coagulation disorders.
- Organ-specific pathology: cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, hepatic and GI pathology.
- Histopathological patterns: recognising classical slide descriptions is a dedicated question category.
Microbiology
Microbiology is a consistently high-yield subject for NEET-PG. The examination draws frequently from:
- Bacteriology: morphology, virulence factors, culture characteristics and diseases caused by key organisms.
- Virology: disease-virus associations, hepatitis serology interpretation, HIV pathophysiology.
- Mycology and parasitology: life cycles of medically important parasites, antifungal targets.
- Immunology: immunoglobulin types, hypersensitivity reactions (Gell and Coombs classification), complement pathways and immunodeficiency syndromes.
- Diagnostic microbiology: which test, which medium, which stain for which organism.
Quick-Win Short Subjects
Short subjects have a smaller absolute question count but offer an excellent return on late-stage revision because their tested content is concentrated and repeatable.
Anatomy
Anatomy questions typically focus on applied anatomy rather than exhaustive dissection knowledge. High-return areas include nerve injury and motor deficits, dermatomes, arterial supply to key organs, relations of important structures and radiological anatomy. These areas appear consistently and are testable with targeted study.
Forensic Medicine
Forensic Medicine has a compact syllabus with repeatable question patterns. Focus on medico-legal examination procedures, wound classification, post-mortem changes, toxicology antidotes and the Indian Penal Code sections relevant to medical practice. A targeted two-week revision typically covers the essential scope.
ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat)
ENT questions cluster around a handful of high-yield areas: tympanic membrane landmarks, types of hearing loss and their audiometric patterns, nasal anatomy and epistaxis management, laryngeal carcinoma staging, and key surgical procedures. Previous year questions reveal a predictable pattern that rewards specific revision.
Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology is consistently well-represented for its syllabus size. Glaucoma classification and management, retinal detachment types, uveitis patterns, drugs contraindicated in eye conditions, and orbit anatomy are perennially tested. Image-based questions on fundoscopy findings also feature regularly.
How to Prioritise Using PYQs
Previous year questions are the most honest signal available for where a paper actually allocates marks. An effective strategy uses them in two ways.
First, use a PYQ analysis from at least the last three years to confirm which chapters within each subject generate the most questions in the current cycle. Syllabi shift, and a topic that was repeatedly tested five years ago may have faded while a newer clinical guideline drives fresh questions. Currency matters.
Second, study PYQs by topic rather than by year. When you see the same concept tested across three different years in different clinical framings, that is a reliable signal to invest deep understanding rather than surface-level memorisation.
A defensible prioritisation order based on historical patterns:
- Phase one: Medicine, Pharmacology, Pathology and Microbiology. These form the deepest and most inter-connected block.
- Phase two: Surgery, OBG, Paediatrics. Clinical subjects that build on the para-clinical foundation.
- Phase three: Community Medicine. A sizeable subject with its own logic; begin early and return to it regularly.
- Phase four: Short subjects. Forensic Medicine, ENT, Ophthalmology, Anatomy high-yield areas. Best revised in the final six to eight weeks when they are fresh for the paper.
