NEET PG 2026: Exam Date, Pattern and Key Changes
Everything you need to know about NEET PG 2026 -- expected exam date, updated pattern, marking scheme and changes introduced by NBEMS.
NEET PG 2026: What We Know So Far
NEET PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate courses) remains the single gateway examination for admission to MD, MS and PG Diploma programmes across India. Conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), the exam determines admissions to approximately 45,000+ postgraduate medical seats nationwide.
Expected Exam Date
NEET PG has historically been conducted between March and August, though the exact window has varied in recent years due to policy changes and logistical considerations. NBEMS typically announces the exam date 8-12 weeks before the examination. Candidates are advised to monitor the official NBEMS website (natboard.edu.in) and the NEET PG information bulletin for confirmed dates.
The trend in recent cycles has been toward conducting NEET PG in a single day across multiple shifts, with computer-based testing at designated Prometric or TCS iON centres across India.
Exam Pattern and Structure
Based on recent cycles, the NEET PG pattern consists of 200 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to be completed in 3 hours 30 minutes. The questions are drawn from 19 subjects covering the MBBS curriculum, broadly divided into pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical subjects.
The marking scheme awards 4 marks for each correct answer and deducts 1 mark for each incorrect answer. Unanswered questions carry no marks and no penalty. The total possible score is 800.
NBEMS has been progressively increasing the proportion of clinical vignette-based questions, requiring candidates to apply knowledge rather than simply recall facts. Image-based questions (radiology, pathology, dermatology, ophthalmology) have also become more prominent.
Key Changes and Trends
Recent NEET PG cycles have seen several notable changes. NBEMS has moved to a more competency-based question design aligned with the NMC's Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum. The difficulty level has generally increased, with more emphasis on clinical reasoning and less on isolated factual recall.
The counselling process, managed by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for AIQ seats and by respective state authorities for state quota seats, continues to follow a multi-round structure. Candidates should be aware of the distinction between AIQ (All India Quota, 50% of seats) and state quota counselling.
How to Prepare
With the shift toward clinical vignettes, preparation strategy should prioritise understanding clinical presentations and differential diagnoses over rote memorisation. Subject-wise, pharmacology, medicine, surgery and pathology carry the highest weightage. High-yield topics include recent advances, national health programmes, drug of choice, and investigation of choice for common conditions.
MedNext Academy's QBank covers the full NEET PG syllabus with explanation-backed MCQs, spaced repetition and performance analytics to target weak areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is NEET PG 2026 expected to be held?
NEET PG is typically conducted between March and August each year by NBEMS. The exact date is announced on the official NBEMS website (natboard.edu.in). Candidates should monitor the site regularly for the official notification.
Has the NEET PG pattern changed for 2026?
NBEMS periodically updates the exam pattern. Recent years have seen the exam conducted in a single session with 200 MCQs in 3 hours 30 minutes, with a mix of clinical and recall-type questions. Check the official information bulletin for the most current pattern.
