NEET PG Counselling in Maharashtra: Seats, Cutoffs and Process
Complete guide to NEET PG counselling in Maharashtra covering DMER process, seat matrix, top colleges, cutoff trends, and documents required for state quota admission.
NEET PG counselling in Maharashtra
Maharashtra is among the largest states for postgraduate medical education in India, with a vast network of government and private medical colleges. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) conducts state-level counselling for PG medical admissions under the state quota. The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik is the primary affiliating body.
The state offers a large number of PG seats across MD, MS, and diploma programmes. Major cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur host some of the most prestigious medical institutions in the country. Maharashtra also has a significant number of deemed university seats that follow separate admission processes.

AIQ vs state quota
In Maharashtra, 50% of PG seats in government medical colleges are allocated to the All India Quota and filled through MCC counselling. The remaining 50% forms the state quota managed by DMER. Private medical colleges in Maharashtra also surrender a portion of their seats to the state quota as per government regulations.
The state quota is further divided into open merit, SC, ST, VJ/DT-NT, OBC, EWS, and other reserved categories as per Maharashtra's reservation policy. In-service candidates from government service also have a separate quota.

Seat matrix
Maharashtra has approximately 5,000-6,000 PG medical seats, making it one of the states with the highest number of postgraduate seats in India. Government medical colleges contribute around 2,000-2,500 seats, while private colleges, deemed universities, and municipal corporation-run colleges account for the rest.
Mumbai alone has a significant concentration of PG seats across KEM, Sion, Nair, JJ, and other municipal and government hospitals. The state has been adding seats with new NMC-approved colleges in tier-2 cities.
Cutoff trends (historical reference)
Maharashtra's top government colleges like KEM and Grant Medical College typically see general category cutoffs for clinical branches within ranks 500-3,000. Mid-tier government colleges may fill up to rank 8,000-12,000. Reserved categories can secure seats at higher rank numbers.
Private college seats under government quota have cutoffs in the range of rank 10,000-30,000 for popular branches. Management quota seats in private colleges are available at higher ranks but come with substantially higher fee structures.

Counselling process
DMER conducts an online counselling process that begins with registration on the official CET Cell/DMER website. Candidates must complete their profile, upload scanned documents, and verify their eligibility. A provisional merit list is published based on NEET PG scores, and candidates can raise grievances if there are discrepancies.
After the final merit list is published, candidates participate in centralised online choice filling. They can select from available college-branch combinations based on their preferences. Seat allotment is done through a centralised algorithm in multiple rounds.
The counselling is conducted in three rounds: Round 1, Round 2, and a Mop-Up round. Candidates allotted seats must report to the college within the stipulated time, complete admission formalities, and pay fees. An institutional-level round may follow if seats remain vacant after the mop-up round.
Key dates and deadlines (historical reference)
The following timelines are based on previous counselling cycles. 2026 dates have not been officially announced unless stated above.
DMER counselling typically commences in March-April after NEET PG results are declared. Round 1 allotment is usually in April-May, Round 2 in May-June, and the mop-up round in June-July. Candidates should check the DMER website (dmer.org) and the CET Cell portal for official schedule announcements.
Tips for Maharashtra counselling
Understand the complex reservation structure in Maharashtra, including VJ/DT-NT/SBC categories specific to the state. The state has a large number of in-service seats reserved for candidates working in government health services, so check if you qualify.
Mumbai municipal corporation colleges (KEM, Sion, Nair) have their own fee structure which is typically lower than other colleges. Pay attention to whether a private college seat is under government quota or management quota, as the fee difference can be several lakhs per year.
